I would like to start this blog by telling you that I don’t play computer games or board games. I don’t do crosswords or Sudoku. However, for the last 12 months, I have been addicted to a vocabulary game called Wordle. Click here to open it up on your device.

Wordle began during the first couple of years of the pandemic and has continued to be popular. The best way to describe it is it's an online word game. For me, the best thing about it is that you can only play it once a day and a game can last 5 minutes or 20 minutes. So I don't spend hours and hours addicted to my phone all day. I think it is a fun way to start my brain thinking about English in the morning. I do it with my first cup of tea for the day.

Let me explain the system to you. I've also made a little video to show you how I play it. Click here to watch it if you prefer. However, keep reading below for my tips to help you play.

Firstly, you can download the app or you can just use the website. I use the website on my phone and I just never close it.

The purpose of the game is to guess the secret 5-letter word, and you have 6 attempts to guess it. 

In the first line, you can write your first 5- letter word. For example, think, craft, speak. Any of these words are good words. They have a mixture of common vowels (a,e,i,o and u) and consonants. Consonant clusters (=groups of consonants that are commonly used together) are great to think about eg. th, ch, sh, br, sl, tch, ck. Another thing to think about is common ways English words end eg - y, -er, -st, -th,

When you have input your first word, then you hit ‘enter’. The letters will turn the colour green,  yellow or grey. The green colour means that you have guessed the correct letter and it is in the correct place. Yellow means that you have guess a correct letter, but it is not in the correct place. If the letter is grey, this means that it is not in the secret word. Now, with this new information, it is time to guess again. Remember, you only have 6 guesses before you lose.

Like I said above, I'm not really into computer games. I think the main reason I like Wordle so much is that you can only play it once a day. Once you have guessed or tried to guess using the 6 attempts, you have to wait till tomorrow to play a new game. I have a group of friends that play Wordle daily too and we all share our game with each other. 

I strongly suggest you give Wordle a try. Ask your friends, you might be surprised how many people are actually playing this game. I believe it might be in other languages too.
